More of Chaw’s drunken rowdiness exposed

MALAYSIAN singer Gary Chaw is facing more problems following the news of his fight with Hong Kong artiste Justin Lo.

Major Chinese dailies in Malaysia reported that more stories of Chaw misbehaving were being exposed in the media in Taiwan and Hong Kong.

A reader told the Taiwan media that Chaw had held a knife to his wife’s neck when he was drunk.

“The street-fighting incident was not the first time he lost control after being intoxicated,” said the reader.

Chaw’s Taiwanese wife Wu Su-ling had, however, denied the allegation, and answered: “Impossible.”

Other allegations of Chaw’s drunken misconduct included him damaging a restaurant signboard and throwing glasses onto the floor.

It was also reported that he was assaulted twice while drinking at pubs.

Chaw returned to Malaysia on Saturday after requesting a 14-day vacation to rest.

Meanwhile, the Hong Kong CID has opened investigations into Wednesday’s fight.

Police have contacted some witnesses, including a taxi driver, and are expected to record a statement from Lo soon.

Street Fighting recorded on camera

HONG KONG: Award-winning Malaysian singer Gary Chaw and Hong Kong artiste Justin Lo are normally the best of friends. But the two pop stars turned into the worst of enemies during a roadside brawl after drinks at a pub here.

The local paparazzi were rewarded with dramatic photos of Chaw and Lo punching each other and Chaw kicking Lo while the latter was in the back seat of a taxi.

Lo, better known as Zak Tin, was even invited as the guest singer at Chaw’s concert in Malaysia last year.

On Tuesday night, they had gone for a drink at a pub with several friends at Central district.

When they're not fighting: Lo appeared as a guest singer at Chaw’s concert in Kuala Lumpur last year.

At about 1am, Chaw left the pub in anger while Lo followed with a “red face”. They then had a heated argument by the roadside.

Hong Kong’s Oriental Daily News reported that Chaw punched Lo until he collapsed on the side of the road.

Lo got up and fought back. After a while, they were pulled apart by their friends.

In a dramatic turn of events, the duo left in a taxi together with two male friends but the vehicle made an emergency stop soon after.

Chaw alighted and was seen jumping on the street and calling out to Lo to step out for a one-on-one fight. The latter refused.

The 30-year-old Malaysian then kicked at Lo who was in the back seat.

After a while, the 33-year-old Lo got off and was seen grimacing in pain, using his hands to cover his private parts.

Then Chaw grabbed a road sign and attempted to hit Lo with it, but was stopped by their friends.

Half-an-hour later, both of them left separately accompanied by friends. Chaw behaved as though nothing had happened during an interview with a Hong Kong radio station on Wednesday. He only talked about his concert in November.

At a press conference in Hong Kong last night though, Chaw apologised to Lo for his act.

“I have no excuses, no reasons. I am wrong. I am willing to take whatever responsibility, punishment....

“Justin had never wanted to hurt me with his actions. It is very obvious this is not a fight ... it was me who lost control,” he said.

Chaw, who was born in Sabah, was sent to study in Canada when he was only nine. He returned home and participated in an Astro singing contest in 1999 but lost.

Later, he was signed up by a recording company and released his album Xiao Wo Ben (Laugh at my stupidity).

Lo, who is also a song-writer and record producer born in America, was signed up as a singer in 2005.

The same year, his debut album Justin was released and became a hit with 15,000 copies sold on the first day. He held his debut concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum the next year and the tickets were sold out within 10 minutes.

He held his seventh concert in Malaysia on Christmas eve in 2006.

Police are investigating Gary and Justin's brawl

Gary Cao and Justin shocked the entire city by their drunken actions that caused a scene on the streets of Central. The police investigated the case and will handle it as a simple assault case. According to Gold Label, the police has already contacted Justin Lo for further investigation.

According to sources, the police contacted most of the eyewitnesses already and will soon make arrangements to have them describe the situation. After two days of investigation, the police felt that Gary and Justin were just engaged in a simple fight and it is nothing serious, therefore will probably just treat it as a simple assault case. However, because the two are public figures, the case may involve the public and after consideration, it has been decided that the case will be passed on to the Central Police District Crime Squad.

The police department's spokesperson expressed that the police is still investigating and no one has been arrested yet. Yesterday the Deputy Commander Mr. Law said that the fight too place in Central and Admiralty areas and will probably be contacting the relevant individuals involved. According to sources, the people who have been contacted is Gary, Justin, the taxi driver and the construction workers at the Cotton Tree Drive.

Justin's record company CEO Mr. Chan Fai Hung confirmed: "Today the Police contacted us to look for Justin for investigation. We will be sending a lawyer to represent Justin. Justin will definitely accommodate the police investigation as much as possible." As for the other main character, Gary Cao, he already left Hong Kong. His record company Rock Records spokesperson expressed that the police has not contacted them yet: "If the police requests that they want to investigate Gary, we will definitely accommodate that."

As the two were fighting in public, which causes damage to their reputation, Mr. Chan described Justin as "unexpected disaster", he felt that Justin this time was the victim and as Gary and Justin has a strong friendship, Gold Label voiced out that "we won't be taking legal action". Asked if that is to make it less difficult for Justin? Mr. Chan said: "We will discuss it when the time comes, if Justin says no, then we will respect his views."

After the incident, Gold Label talked to Justin about it, Mr. Chan said: "They are really good friends, we don't hope to control our artistes making friends, but we did advise him that if the friend is drunk, they may act abormally, lose control, he should definitely handle it carefully. Actually that day he knew that his friend drank a lot, but he wanted to take care of him, so therefore he was not drunk.

Mr. Chan strongly stressed that Gold Label does not have any control for Justin's actions, he said: "Was he wrong? Yes he was wrong because afterall he is an artist and created such incident on the streets in public. This time, they are both at fault and I hope that he learned a valuable lesson. He is an adult and should understand." It was rumored that Justin is neglected by his company, Mr. Chan expressed that he did not hear about this. He said: "There's always rumors about these things, Justin's jobs are still going to resume like normal, nothing has changed. His new album is currently scheduled to release at the end of this year." Tonight, Justin will be attending Andrew Lam's concert as guest performer and after that Gold Label has made arrangements for Justin to meet with the Media.

Cao apologizes to the public of HK

Police will look into a street brawl between entertainer sworn brothers Justin Lo Ting-wai and Gary Cao Ge in the early hours of Wednesday.
The fight went into two rounds - the first outside a bar in Peel Street, SoHo, and the second outside the Bank Of America Tower on Harcourt Road.

Video footage of the blows was an instant hit on the internet, much to the chagrin of their fans, some of whom went online to say they were poor role models for Hong Kong's youth.

Lo, 33, went on air yesterday morning to publicly apologize, saying they have made up. "It was very wrong and very stupid. We acted like kindergarten children. I am embarrassed by what happened," Lo said. He said the fight arose from a misunderstanding between Cao and one of his friends.

Lo is the godfather of Cao's one- year-old son. He said they had a few drinks prior to the incident but were not drunk. Although he received several blows, he was not injured.

In a press conference yesterday afternoon, Cao made a public apology, stressing it was all his fault, and bowing deeply to his audience. "I will accept both the responsibility and any punishment as a result of this incident. There is no excuse for what I did," Cao said.

The singer admitted he had a drink problem. He said he had tried to rectify it but this incident proved he had failed.

Central police deputy commander Felix Law Cheuk-hung said it is illegal to fight in public and charges could be laid if there is enough evidence.

The singers went to the Peel Street bar with friends around 1am on Wednesday. After several drinks, Malaysian-born Cao was seen leaving followed by Lo and several friends. They exchanged words and then blows.

But after friends mediated, the singers got into a taxi. However, when it reached the Bank of America Tower, Cao got out and yelled at the passengers inside. He then threw a kick at a passenger, believed to be Lo. The taxi traveled forward a short distance and stopped again with Lo and their friends getting out.

A furious-looking Cao then picked up a temporary road sign and made as if to attack Lo but was stopped by a friend. After talking several minutes, the singers went their separate ways.
